Gulfport native Brittney Reese is back on top after picking up her 11th national title Sunday at the U.S. Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Reese, won the long jump event with a 22-foot, 7-inch jump on her third attempt. She matched her jump on the fifth pass to win by 9 inches over Quanesha Burks.
Reese’s personal best is 23 feet, 9 inches set in Eugene, Oregon, in 2016. The world record is held by Galina Chistyakova , who set it in 1988 with a jump of 24 feet, 8 inches. Jackie Joyner in 1988 with a jump of 24 feet, 3.25 inches.
The victory gives Reese her fourth U.S. Indoor Championship, having previously won in 2009, 2010 and 2016. She also has seven outdoor national championships.
Reese, a member of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Athletics Hall of Fame and an Ole Miss track and field alum, will next focus on the IAAF World Championships in Birmingham, England on March 4.
The former Olympic champion has a gold medal from the 2012 games and a silver from the 2016 games. She also is the current world outdoor title and previously in 2009, 2011 and 2013.
